My name is Toni Dunnwald, but the kids call me “Ms. D”. I have been an educator in one form or another for over 20 years. I graduated from Hubbell, Callanan and Roosevelt (way too long ago), but am very proud to be back at Hubbell! I graduated from Iowa State University with a BA in Visual Arts and Art Education, with a teaching certification in K-12 Art. I’ve taught High School and Middle School Visual Arts, in Iowa, and Kansas and worked as a substitute teacher in Illinois. My family moved back to the Des Moines area in 2014 and I’ve been working at Hubbell as a Special Education Associate since 2015. I live in the neighborhood, and love seeing kids and families at Franklin Library, HyVee or Roosevelt activities. My role at Hubbell is to support special education students and help all students as needed. I take it as a personal goal to see as many smiles each day as possible!
This is my first year teaching at Hubbell and I couldn’t be more excited! I grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Dowling High School in 2007. I attended college at University of Northern Iowa and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Special Education. I taught special education for grades 3-5 last year at Capitol View Elementary, and this year I’m happy to be working with Kindergarten, 3rd and 4th grade at Hubbell. I am eager to build relationships with the students and staff at Hubbell and look forward to the coming years.
Welcome to the Hubbell Resource Room! I graduated from Drake University in 1977 with a degree in Elementary Education and with an endorsement in Early Childhood Education. I received my master’s degree in Special Education from Drake University. While studying for my master’s degree, I worked as a graduate assistant at Drake. I have been teaching with Des Moines Public Schools for 23 years. I have worked as a special education teacher at Brubaker and Douglas Elementary Schools. While teaching at Douglas Elementary, I also served as the Assistant Principal. This is my 4th year at Hubbell Elementary as a special education teacher. I feel very fortunate to be part of the Hubbell Community and to be able to share in the IB adventure!
In addition to my degrees, I have the following endorsements:
K-6 Teacher Elementary Classroom
PK-K Teacher, Prekindergarten-Kindergarten Classroom
K-8 Multicategorical Resource Mild
K-8 Instructional Strategist I: Mild/Moderate
I am a graduate of the University of Iowa with a BA in Art and Art History, and a K12 certification in Art Education. I officially joined the Hubbell team in 2017, but have been a Hubbell mom since 2009. In my position as a Special Education Associate, I assist students who need extra help learning, focusing, and/or meeting behavior expectations.
