Welcome to 3rd grade! I have been teaching in the Des Moines School District for 30 years as an elementary Title reading and math teacher and 5th grade classroom teacher. This is my 15th year at Hubbell as a 3rd grade classroom teacher! I received my degree in elementary education from Western Illinois University with a minor in business. In 1988 I received my Master’s Degree from Drake University. It is a pleasure working with Hubbell students as they become successful as lifelong learners!

Hello! My name is Carey Dunley-Carlson. I love teaching 2nd grade! I have been with Des Moines Public Schools for 27 years- mostly teaching second grade. I was also a math trainer for the district. I planned and implemented professional development for DMPS teachers in math and worked with all grade levels. I was a supervisor for Iowa State University students for several years for math/ science methods summer school.
My undergraduate degree is from the University of Iowa in Elementary Education where I specialized in social studies and history. I have a Master’s Degree from Drake University in the Effective Teaching program
My name is Toni Dunnwald, but the kids call me “Ms. D”. I have been an educator in one form or another for over 20 years. I graduated from Hubbell, Callanan and Roosevelt (way too long ago), but am very proud to be back at Hubbell! I graduated from Iowa State University with a BA in Visual Arts and Art Education, with a teaching certification in K-12 Art. I’ve taught High School and Middle School Visual Arts, in Iowa, and Kansas and worked as a substitute teacher in Illinois. My family moved back to the Des Moines area in 2014 and I’ve been working at Hubbell as a Special Education Associate since 2015. I live in the neighborhood, and love seeing kids and families at Franklin Library, HyVee or Roosevelt activities. My role at Hubbell is to support special education students and help all students as needed. I take it as a personal goal to see as many smiles each day as possible!
Welcome to 5th grade! My name is Carrie England (formerly Neuhaus). I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a double major in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I have been teaching with Des Moines Public Schools for the past 10 years. 8 of those years were spent teaching 2nd grade at Stowe Elementary. I have really enjoyed the change to 5th grade and the move to Hubbell Elementary!
I began teaching at Hubbell immediately after graduating from Simpson College with endorsements in Reading and Language Arts. I have enjoyed many years here with third and fourth graders.
My name is Susan Good-Knollinger. I graduated from Grand View College with a BA in Elementary Education and an endorsement in K-6 Reading. I have been a teacher for 12 years. I started my career in Des Moines, and moved to Florida for brief time. I have been at Hubbell for the past 6 years. I have taught first grade for all of my career with the exception of one year in Kindergarten. I am excited to have the opportunity to work with you and your student.
Hello! Welcome to the exciting time of Kindergarten! This is an amazing time in your child’s life, and I can’t wait to be a part of it! My journey in education has been amazing. I was born and raised in Columbus, Nebraska. After graduating from high school, I went on to attend college at Midland University in Fremont, Nebraska, where I studied and played collegiate soccer. After three and a half years, I graduated from Midland in 2016 with a degree in Elementary Education and endorsements in Early Childhood and Coaching. My husband and I moved to Norwalk, Iowa in the fall of 2016 after we were married and have loved every second of it. I am excited to continue my teaching career in Iowa and get to know your littles!
Hello second graders and your families! This is my third year at Hubbell and my seventh year with the district, and I am thrilled to be in second grade! I graduated from Iowa State University (GO state!) in 1997 with a BS in Elementary Education and received my master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with a specialization in English language learning from Buena Vista University. I am excited to get to know each and every one of you as we start this second grade journey together! Hi my name Libby Green. This will be my fourth year working for DMPS, but first year at Hubbell. Previous to coming to Hubbell, I taught first grade at Edmunds Elementary for three years. I was a substitute teacher earlier on while mainly staying home with my kiddos. I am very excited to start a new journey at Hubbell and look forward to meeting lots of new smiling faces eager to learn! I am starting my Masters at Drake in January, so lots of exciting changes.
Hello, my name is Darcy Hankenson and I am the Library Associate here at Hubbell Elementary. I studied at both Iowa State University and the University of Iowa where I studied English, Language, and Theatre. Before I came to Hubbell Elementary, I was a Human Resources manager. Next, I led the charmed life of a stay at home mom with my two (now Hubbell alumni) children. In 2011, I joined the Hubbell team as a special education associate. In January of 2014, I had the good fortune to move to this beautiful Library. It is my favorite room in the school. It always has been. I hope it is a favorite of your children, too. Stop by anytime. Everyone is welcome in the Library, even the Hubbell Ghost.
Welcome to music at Hubbell! I am excited to be joining the Hubbell Hawk community! Prior to teaching at Hubbell, I was vocal director at Roosevelt High School since 2011. I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a B.F.A. in Vocal Performance and Music Education Certification K-12. I look forward to providing excellent opportunities for every student to succeed in music and look forward to all the choir concerts this year. I also teach private voice lessons. I love music and theatre, going to see shows, performing, and spending time with my husband, friends, and family.

This is my first year teaching at Hubbell and I couldn’t be more excited! I grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Dowling High School in 2007. I attended college at University of Northern Iowa and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Special Education. I taught special education for grades 3-5 last year at Capitol View Elementary, and this year I’m happy to be working with Kindergarten, 3rd and 4th grade at Hubbell. I am eager to build relationships with the students and staff at Hubbell and look forward to the coming years.
My name is Mrs. Joan Koch. This will be my 24th year of teaching for Des Moines Public School. I obtained my degree in elementary education with a reading endorsement from the University of Iowa in 1986. I recently received my Master’s Degree in Education from Drake University with an endorsement in Early Childhood Special Education. My past teaching experience includes 3 years of teaching 1st – 5th title reading at Brooks Elementary, 15 years of 1st grade and Reading Recovery at Stowe Elementary, and 5 years of integrated Early Childhood and Early Childhood Special Education at Stowe Elementary and McKee Early Learning Center. I enjoyed my Level 1 IB training and experience at Stowe and am excited to return to an IB school. I am passionate about assisting every learner achieve success in all areas of development and learning and am thrilled to be teaching 3rd grade at Hubbell.
Welcome to the Hubbell Resource Room! I graduated from Drake University in 1977 with a degree in Elementary Education and with an endorsement in Early Childhood Education. I received my master’s degree in Special Education from Drake University. While studying for my master’s degree, I worked as a graduate assistant at Drake. I have been teaching with Des Moines Public Schools for 23 years. I have worked as a special education teacher at Brubaker and Douglas Elementary Schools. While teaching at Douglas Elementary, I also served as the Assistant Principal. This is my 4th year at Hubbell Elementary as a special education teacher. I feel very fortunate to be part of the Hubbell Community and to be able to share in the IB adventure!

Hello, my name is Shay Maxwell and I am the School Counselor here at Hubbell Elementary. I graduated from Iowa State University with degrees in Psychology and Adult, Child, and Family Studies. I then attended Drake University where I received my master’s degree in School Counseling. I have been the counselor in Des Moines since 2017 at Hubbell Elementary and previously I worked at another district. I enjoy being able to build relationships with students and families.
Welcome to kindergarten! Kindergarten is such an amazing time of growth – both academically and socially. It is amazing to begin this school journey with our young learners!
Since graduating from the University of Northern Iowa in 2003, I have spent my teaching years here at Hubbell in a variety of roles. During my first five years here, I taught special education and enjoyed being able to co-teach with many different teachers. I then moved into a general education classroom and taught second grade for three years. I loved teaching second graders—their sense of humor and wonderful questions kept me on my toes! During this time I received my masters from the University of Illinois in Global Studies in Education. I also spent five years working with Hubbell’s amazing staff as the IB coordinator. I learned a ton from our teachers, but was very excited to return to the classroom. Now, I get to spend my days with our youngest learners and love every minute of it!
When I am not at school, you can usually find me at some type of sporting events. Between my 3 children, they are on teams for basketball, wrestling, football, softball, baseball, and volleyball!

My name is Mrs. Jody Pugh, and I had the privilege of attending Hubbell myself and sending my 3 children here as well. It’s wonderful to be teaching at my home school! I graduated from Drake University in 1983 with a major in Elementary Education and a coaching endorsement. I received my Master’s in Education from Viterbo University in 2003. This is my 29th year teaching in the Des Moines Public School District. I have taught 3rd grade at Moulton Elementary, 2nd and 3rd grades at Stowe Elementary, and 3rd and 4th grades at Adams Elementary. I have enjoyed the past 7 years teaching 3rd grade here at Hubbell. I believe in consistent and frequent communication between home and school in order to ensure the success of my students. I look forward to working with you and your child!
Hola! My name is Jennifer Rodriguez and I am the Spanish teacher at Hubbell for all students grades K-5. I graduated with my teaching degree from Grandview College in Des Moines with an endorsement in K-6 foreign language in 2006. I then moved to Mexico and started my teaching career by teaching English as a foreign language. I taught at two different bilingual private schools where the first language of all students was Spanish. When I returned to the United States, I taught Spanish as a long-term sub at Hoover High School for one semester. Then I got my position at Hubbell for the 2008-2009 school year and have been enjoying my position here at Hubbell ever since!

I am a graduate of the University of Iowa with a BA in Art and Art History, and a K12 certification in Art Education. I officially joined the Hubbell team in 2017, but have been a Hubbell mom since 2009. In my position as a Special Education Associate, I assist students who need extra help learning, focusing, and/or meeting behavior expectations.

Welcome to 1st Grade! I have been teaching at Hubbell since 2006. I grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Hoover High School in 2001. I attended Drake University and graduated in 2005 with my B.S.E. with Elementary Education (K-6) and endorsements in Math and Reading. My first year I taught 3rd grade at Wright Elementary. I then moved to Hubbell and taught Kindergarten for 10 years, 2nd grade for a year, and more recently was the IB Coordinator/Instructional Coach. I am so happy to be back in the classroom working with kids and fostering a positive community. I graduated with M.S.E. in Education Leadership: PK-12 principal in 2016 from Drake University. I really like engaging my efforts with such diverse kids having diverse needs. I feel fortunate to be part of the team here at Hubbell and look forward to educating and embracing the successes your child contributes to our community.
I am Hubbell’s reading interventionist. I help students who are struggling in areas of reading become successful readers. Reading is a passion of mine and I love passing that on to as many students as possible. I currently work with students in grades kindergarten through fourth grade.
